The traditional approach to publishing a magazine or a periodical newspaper is often based around a marketing and sales plan that maximises advertising revenue. But as engagement with readers shifts across different types of media, often using multiple forms of media simultaneously, then new strategies and innovative approaches are emerging that need to be tried out and explored. I wanted to find out how Bido Lito! magazine in Liverpool is embracing these challenges, and how Christopher Torpey, the editor, is thinking about models of community engagement, not only to foster a network of contributors who are interested in arts and culture in the city, but also to foster a wider network of community supporters who want to underpin the future development of Bido Lito! in years to come.
