Decentered Media Vlog 003 – Networking as an Introvert

How do you get along with networking when you are an introvert? I wanted to share some thoughts on what it’s been like for me to attend some business networking events recently, and reflect on how they have felt and what I have to do in order to cope with them. I’d love to hear about similar experiences and discuss any suggestions about how to make public engagement events more accessible for more introverted people.

  1. Rob, this is wonderful, thank you. Thinking am a very similar introvert, i believe loads are like this in Radio, happy being in charge of a mic. I used to get paid to network, and escape as quickly as I could. Now self employed, I get more invites than ever before. But I am in control of what I do, and what I don’t, so I go to very very few.
You describe it really well, I can relate to all this.

    • Thanks Ian, it’s easily forgotten that not everyone responds to these things in the same way. I actually enjoy doing the vlog, as I can get my thoughts across. Being more careful about when I participate in these things is a skill I’m going to have to develop. 🙂

  2. Hi Rob. Lots to think about there….. could be a good subject theme for a podcast and also whether Community Media is a good way for introverts to engage in the issues as they can ‘control’ the pace/tone/access/energy level etc….. certainly got me thinking. Thanks for the ‘nod’ and your 3 minute ‘pitch’ was very good!! Jc 🙂

    • Thanks John, keeping the ball rolling and slowly finding a voice can be frustrating, but it’s good to work collaboratively with you and the podcasts, of course, wouldn’t happen without you 🙂
