Sex, Gender Identity, and Freedom of Expression

At Decentered Media, we are committed to supporting open, respectful, and legally grounded civic discourse. Our work is guided by a recognition of the difference between biological sex, as defined in law, and gender identity, as a form of personal or cultural expression. This distinction is essential in maintaining clarity, fairness, and inclusion in public dialogue, academic inquiry, and community representation.

We affirm the following principles:

  • Legal Accuracy
Our communications, research, and advocacy reflect the legal position established by the UK Supreme Court: that under the Equality Act 2010, the term “sex” refers to biological sex. This provides the legal basis for sex-based rights and protections, including in matters of single-sex spaces, data collection, and democratic representation.
  • Freedom of Expression
Decentered Media defends the right to lawful, reasoned, and evidence-informed expression. We believe that respectful disagreement, especially on matters of public interest, is a hallmark of democratic society. We reject attempts to suppress speech through intimidation, misrepresentation, or vexatious complaint.
  • Academic and Civic Integrity
As a platform that values reflective inquiry and community dialogue, we support the role of academic research, journalism, and public deliberation in examining questions of sex, gender identity, and inclusion. This includes the right to ask difficult questions, present contrasting views, and explore contested ideas without fear of censorship or reprisal.
  • Commitment to Respectful Dialogue
We promote thoughtful engagement over ideological polarisation. While we uphold legal and factual clarity, we welcome participation from people of diverse experiences and views, provided discussion remains constructive, evidence-based, and in good faith.

Decentered Media is a space for meaningful conversation—not consensus for its own sake, but understanding through dialogue, grounded in legal rights, civil responsibility, and a shared commitment to democratic principles.
