Volta Premier FM – A View from Ghana

Ghana is host to many radio stations, and Ho, the capital city of the Volta region, has seen rapid growth in the number of commercial stations that are now broadcasting in the region. In an age of increased digital media access, community radio, however, still plays an essential role that enables communities to speak with their own voice and discuss the issues that are of concern to them. In Ghana this means access to information and a shared understanding of the development needs that are defiend by the experiences of life in towns and villages in Ghana. I was fortunate to be able to spend some time in Ho, at the invitation of Dr Divine Novieto from Ho Technical University. I had an opportunity to speak with volunteers and supporters of Premier Volta FM, the campus-based community radio station that was established over ten years ago.
